Located in the heart of Bukit Merah, this 4-room HDB at Block 134 Jalan Bukit Merah was transformed into a calming Wabi-Sabi Minimalist home that celebrates natural textures, soft light, and everyday serenity. Designed to support modern urban living while embracing the beauty of imperfection, this home is a true example of how thoughtful design elevates a typical HDB layout into an intimate sanctuary.

Design Intent: Wabi-Sabi Calm Meets Functional Minimalism

Our homeowners wanted a space that felt quiet, grounded, and timeless—a home where they could unwind after long workdays, free from clutter and unnecessary distractions.

The design goal:
Create a soothing, nature-inspired atmosphere
Maximise spaciousness within a compact 4-room HDB layout
Use raw, authentic materials with soft imperfections
Blend craftsmanship with functional storage and clean lines
Maintain an airy, connected visual flow throughout the flat

Home Tour: Design Highlights by Zenith Arc

1. Kitchen – Organic Minimalism with HDB Efficiency

Streamlined minimalist kitchen with white flat-panel cabinetry, light wood flooring, and an integrated cooktop on the island, showcasing clean lines.

This kitchen balances aesthetics and practicality—perfect for the typical narrow kitchen found in many HDBs around Queenstown and Bukit Merah.

  • Aesthetic Direction: Matte beige and light wood cabinetry, honed stone and concrete-composite countertops, and handle-less panels for uninterrupted visual lines.

  • Functional Enhancements: Seamlessly built-in oven and fridge; space-saving integrated washing machine; easy-wipe, matte cabinet finishes.

The result is a kitchen that feels open and calm despite its compact footprint.

2. Living & Dining – Soft Light, Warm Texture

Serene Wabi-Sabi minimalist living room with a plush white sofa, a glass coffee table, and soft beige tones, creating a calm, comfortable environment in the HDB.

The main social space is designed to feel spacious, cohesive, and airy.

  • Visual Lightness: Sliding glass partitions provide zonal flexibility; light wood flooring with exposed grain extends visual width; earthy, cream-toned walls create a soft ambient glow.

  • Comfort & Materiality: Linen and cotton fabrics enhance natural tactility; sculptural pendant lighting adds organic softness and texture above the dining area.

3. Bedrooms – Private Retreats for Rest & Reflection

Wabi-Sabi minimalist master bedroom showcasing symmetrical design, recessed warm ambient lighting behind the bed, and plush textures for a tranquil retreat.
Elegant minimalist dressing room in the 4-room HDB featuring a round illuminated vanity mirror and glass-fronted cabinets for displaying designer accessories.

The bedrooms are designed as slow-living environments, prioritising emotional calm.

  • Master Bedroom: Balanced symmetry; recessed lighting for a diffused, ambient glow; soft textiles and muted bedding; integrated wardrobe for clean, seamless lines.

  • Dressing Room / Vanity: Glass-fronted display cabinets and built-in vanity with warm backlit mirrors maintain an organised, yet visually serene space.

Materials, Colours & Lighting Direction

To maintain authenticity to Wabi-Sabi principles, the home uses:

  • Material Palette: Light oak wood with visible grain, beige and cream textured laminates, matte finishes, honed stone surfaces with natural veining, and raw concrete touches.

  • Colour Palette: Warm neutrals, soft browns, chalky whites, and earth-toned accents.

  • Lighting: Warm 2700K–3000K mood lighting; recessed channels for soft glow; pendant forms with organic textures—enhancing the beauty of shadows and imperfections.

FAQs – Wabi-Sabi Minimalist HDB Renovation

  1. Is Wabi-Sabi suitable for a small 4-room HDB in Singapore?
Yes. The philosophy focuses on natural textures, soft tones, and visual calm—perfect for maximising the sense of space in compact homes.

  2. Does Wabi-Sabi require expensive materials?
Not necessarily. We achieved this look using high-quality matte laminates, textured finishes, and simple, durable stone composites, without needing premium imported stone throughout.

  3. Can this style work with pets or kids?
Yes. Wabi-Sabi celebrates natural wear and lived-in beauty, making it more forgiving than glossy, high-maintenance designs.

  4. How long does a full 4-room HDB renovation take?
Typically 8–12 weeks depending on carpentry scope and complexity of structural changes.
